Preauricular Surgical Technique
The preauricular surgical technique was invented to provide a way for surgeons to perform repairs on the mandibular condylar head and neck region. Before this technique became precedent, it was very hard for doctors to repair any fracture or damage done inside the jaw and neck region without creating a huge incision. Therefore, once the preauricular surgical technique was invented, it quickly became the recommended surgical procedure to treat any fractures in the head and neck region.
What Is The Preauricular Surgical Technique?

The preauricular surgical technique consists of a small incision along the area where the ear connects to the face. Once the incision is made the licensed surgeon can use this opening to access the mandibular condylar head and neck region to perform repairs to the bones, ligaments, and nerves. Many surgeons use this technique while fixing damage or fractures related to the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Once the repairs have been made, the surgeon will close the incision with just a few stitches, therefore scarring and swelling will be minimized.
How Long Does It Take?
Every surgery that consists of a preauricular approach varies. It is hard to say how long surgery with a preauricular approach will take until the surgeon opens the patient up and is able to see what exactly they are dealing with. That being said, this procedure is as minimally invasive as possible, and typically lasts no longer than 95 minutes.
How Is The Preauricular Surgical Technique Performed?
When surgery is conducted using the preauricular surgical technique, a small incision will be made in the preauricular region of the ear. Once the initial incision is made, they will make an incision into the subcutaneous layers of the skin to expose the temporalis fascia which is a shiny white layer of tissue that protects the nerves, ligaments, and joints in the mandibular condyle head and neck region.
Once the temporalis fascia is exposed, the superficial temporal vessels will be retracted. Then an incision will be made in parallel to the frontal branch of the facial above the zygomatic arch. Then the periosteum will be stripped using a periosteal elevator. Then the temporomandibular joint will be exposed enough to allow proper and efficient repairs.
Once all the necessary repairs have been made, the temporalis fascia will be repaired, as well as the incision in the preauricular area of the ear using skin and subcutaneous sutures to allow for minimal scarring.
