The facelift is a plastic surgery procedure designed to elevate, mobilize and reposition sagging and aging skin and muscles of the face and neck. This is an excellent procedure for people dealing with face sagging after weight loss and is best performed under local anesthesia at younger ages. Today, the longest lasting and most natural results are achieved by working on the deepest layer of facial tissue and muscle, known as the SMAS or Superficial Muscular Aponeurotic System.

Reasons For Getting A Facelift
One day you might look in the mirror and wonder, why is my skin sagging? What causes skin to sag? There could be a number of reasons that you are dealing with sagging skin on your face. As we grow older our skin’s ability to produce collagen and elastin, the two proteins that help produce elasticity in our skin, slows down. This coupled with harmful UV (ultraviolet) rays from the sun damaging our skin cells slowly breaks down the skin’s elasticity. These two factors are the main reason our skin sags as we grow older. There are other situations that could cause sagging skin on your face such as weight loss.
If you have carried around extra weight for a significant amount of time and then lose that weight you could end up dealing with face sagging issues such as saggy cheeks, or neck skin. This sagging of your face skin after weight loss is also a result of loss of collagen and elastin and although creams and supplements can offer some results, often cosmetic procedures are required to deal with sagging face skin after weight loss as facial exercises are not proven to be effective in firming up the skin again.
Here at Aventura Plastic Surgery near Miami, FL, we are happy to meet with people who are experiencing face sagging after weight loss, or are dealing with sagging skin due to age and are looking to firm up their skin once again. We will discuss all of your facelift options at our Miami office and help you choose the correct treatment path for you.
What Is The Difference Between A Full Facelift And A Mini Facelift?
For people that are starting to notice the signs of aging and are looking to take care of them but don’t necessarily want the dramatic results of a full facelift, a mini facelift is a great option. A mini facelift works very similarly to a full facelift in that the incisions are made in the same place but typically focuses on minor tightening of the skin in the jawline and around the eyes. A full facelift on the other hand will also deal with brows, chin, and neck. A mini facelift is best for patients that are looking for a subtle change and whose skin has some laxity but is not sagging too much. Because this procedure is less invasive than a full facelift the recovery time is typically half of what it is for a full facelift. If you are uncertain whether a mini facelift or full facelift is the best choice for you don’t hesitate to contact our Miami plastic surgery office to set up a consultation with Dr. Galitz.

Type of Anesthesia
Today, many types of facelift plastic surgery near you can be safely and painlessly performed while you are awake. Local anesthesia, also called local anesthetic, is usually a one-time injection of medicine that numbs a small area of the body. At our Miami office, local anesthesia with oral sedation is administered as a prevention used during minor procedures to numb a small site where the pain is likely to occur without changing the patient’s awareness. Patients will be awake and alert, and you may feel some pressure, but won’t feel pain in the area being treated. Many patients are likely familiar with local anesthetics being used for dental procedures and for numbing an area that needs to be stitched.
During a Miami facelift in our local office, local anesthetic with oral sedation has made it possible to perform surgical procedures quickly, with less preparation and a shorter recovery time. General anesthesia and anesthesia that sedates you can cause side effects such as nausea, and a physician anesthesiologist must monitor you if you are administered these types of anesthesia — during the facelift procedure and for a time afterward. Side effects and complications are rare and usually minor when a patient receives local anesthesia with oral sedation in our Miami plastic surgery office.
When you enter our Miami plastic surgery office for a procedure, you will be given local anesthesia with oral sedation prior to your facelift. Local anesthesia is given as a “cocktail” of pills while you relax in our patient waiting area for about an hour prior to your facelift surgery. Local injections of Xylocaine are then administered. Our patients love the fact they do not have to deal with the risk of IV or general anesthesia (a tube inserted into their throat). Our Miami local anesthesia eliminates much of the cost associated with having a facelift and also minimizes the intraoperative bleeding which then makes the recovery process from your facelift in Miami, Florida much easier.

How To Prepare For Face Lift Surgery
A facelift is a fantastic way to improve the youthful look of your face. It is however considered a medical procedure and as such there are things to be aware of prior to having it done. Here at Avenura Plastic Surgery in Miami when a patient is planning to have a facelift we will have them come in for a consultation and go over everything they need to do both before and after the procedure but below is a small list of things you can do before having a facelift to help your procedure and recovery go smoother.
Avoid Anti-Inflammatory Medications – Aspirin and other medications like blood pressure pills work at blood thinners. Before having facelift surgery it is important to speak with a doctor about suspending taking these medications as they could lead to bleeding complications during the surgery.
Use Preoperative Products – If the doctor suggests applying topical creams before the surgery make sure to follow through with his or her instructions.
Stay Hydrated – Make sure that you are drinking plenty of water in the days leading up to the surgery. Being well hydrated will help your body recover from the surgery more quickly.
Wash Your Hair and Body – Surgery takes a toll on a person, it is recommended that you have a shower and wash your hair the night before or even morning of your surgery.
Arrange Assistance – You will have to have someone with you to drive you home after your procedure. Make sure you have them ready to go the day of.
Stock Up On Supplies – During your recovery you will need to rest and avoid touching your face. Having items like hair clips or headbands to keep your hair off your face, easy to put on button up or zip up shirts and sweaters, as well as a very gentle face soap are all items you’ll want on hand.
Avoid Sun Exposure – Sun damaged and burned skin does not handle surgery as well as protected skin does and will prolong the post-op healing process.
Quit Smoking – We all know that smoking is an unhealthy habit. If you do smoke it is important to stop at least six weeks ahead of the surgery to help lessen the chances of complications during the procedure and to help improve the recovery time.
The Procedure
The incision for the facelift surgery is located at the hairline along the temples and the ear and continuing behind the ear into the scalp. Through this incision, Miami plastic surgeon Dr. Richard Galitz will perform SMAS placation, suction excess fat from the neck and chin, and trim excess sagging skin. Recovery after the facelift takes approximately one to two weeks and may include some swelling, bruising, numbness and discomfort. Discomfort can be alleviated with medication and swelling can be minimized by keeping the head elevated during the first few days. It may take several weeks for the bruising to fully fade. The stitches are removed after one week, at which time most patients are able to return to work. Exercise and more strenuous activities can be resumed after one to three weeks.
Possible Complications
Complications are possible with any surgery. For facelift surgery, there is the rare risk of skin loss and infection and, even less common, facial nerve injury. Choosing a qualified and experienced plastic surgeon near you in Miami who is board certified can help to maximize your facelift results while minimizing your risk.
